The Madra Mór Weekend Watchlist Issue #8 - WWII

Every week we will be listing a great film, TV show and short film that we love and we think you will too. Time to put the feet up, crack open a beverage and enjoy.

Issue #8

Last Saturday (May 8th) marked VE Day and with that, we thought it was the perfect time to bring some incredible WW2 shows to the forefront. This week's film is the intense Son of Saul, TV show is the brilliant Band of Brothers and the short film is the eye opening A Night at the Garden.

THE MOVIE: Son of Saul

One of the most harrowing films I have ever seen. Son of Saul is a claustrophobic, intense and terrifyingly sad tale of the holocaust. We follow closely behind the main character, Saul Ausländer, as he lives through the hell that is Auschwitz. László Nemes directing is simply brilliant and does not let you off the hook for one second which is the only way to tell a story like this.

THE TV SHOW: Band of Brothers

A ten part mini series created by HBO. It follows the US paratroopers from Easy company. Predominately set in Normandy, France - (interestingly quite close to where I teach my film program) - after the initial landings, it covers them all the way to Berlin. Packed with familiar faces and produced by Stephen Speilberg and Tom Hanks. Damian Lewis is outstanding as Major Winters.

In 1939, 20,000 Americans rallied in New York's Madison Square Garden to celebrate the rise of Nazism -- an event largely forgotten from U.S. history. This is so hard to believe that it feels like fiction.

Have a great weekend.
