Issue #4
This week we are focusing on all things British. From Claire Foy (later Olivia Colman) in Buckingham Palace to Peter Mullan and Olivia Colman in a working class suburb. Two excellent pieces of film and television with two completely contrasting view points. The indulgence and privilege of a royal life to a life of simply trying to survive.
THE MOVIE: Tyrannosaur
Peter Mullan, Olivia Colman and Eddie Marsan. Three actors who absolutely knocked the socks off of me in this film. I could not look away. Captivating, terrifying, brutal and poignant. This is a tale of the quiet devastation that happens behind closed doors and how sometimes, it can take a chance encounter with a stranger to open that door up. Incredible writing and directing from Paddy Considine, a brilliant actor in his own right.
THE TV SHOW: The Crown (Season I & II)
You may be wondering why I have only listed season one and two above and I will tell you. It is because I have only gotten around to seeing season one and two so far. Does that potentially mean I am promoting a show before it goes off the deep end, maybe. I very much doubt it when Olivia Colman is involved and that brings me to the reason why I have suggested this show. Claire Foy. Personally, I do not have much interest in the royal family and their issues. In fact, at times I find it somewhat boring however, for this particular show, I had a personal interest in that I worked in the west end when The Audience was being performed at the Gielgud Theatre so I have seen both Peter Morgan and Stephen Daldry working on that show and thought it was definitely worth a goosey gander. While there are similarities, this show covers a much wider scope than The Audience did and were it not for Claire Foy's performance, I am not sure I would have stuck it out but her performance is SO GOOD that I would recommend this show to anyone for that reason alone.
THE SHORT FILM: MASTERPIECE
A brilliantly funny short film about a group of friends coming to see their mates art show and the inevitable awkwardness of not knowing how to feel when you see the work.
